Hans Osnabrugge: Everyone Should Be Connected to the World

At Talk360, we believe that everyone should be connected to the world. But over 41% of the world does not have Internet, and the most heavily hit are underserviced communities in developing countries. To bridge this distance, our mobile calling app connects over 150 thousand people globally to friends and family in places where there is no continuous and reliable Internet. While enabling this though, we realized that there is an even bigger challenge, specifically in Africa. Over 70% of all African consumers are unable to purchase international digital services, like ours. The African payment culture is diverse and scattered with cash and different wallets & cards. To connect these people to international paid services, we are building the world’s first single payment platform combining all local African currencies and payment methods.

Tell us about yourself?

Hans was a banker, who later followed his passion into serial entrepreneurship. He co-founded Brooklyn Ventures, a venture building company, and is now CEO of Talk360. All companies Hans is involved in have a positive impact on society in general and a strong desire to scale internationally.

What is the inspiration behind your business?

The idea behind Talk360 is to enable affordable and easy international calling, for everyone despite location or financial background. His South African co-founder, Dean Hiine, was the one to inspire Hans with the purpose of helping underserviced communities, especially in Africa. In Western countries, talking with friends and family are a given. However, in developing countries, and especially in underserviced communities, it is considered a privilege.

What is your magic sauce?

Our magic sauce is building a simple and reliable calling app, which our customers trust and love. Furthermore, through hyper-localizing our approach in Africa with local currencies and local distribution networks, we set ourselves apart form competition.

Where do you see your company going in 5 years time?

While we were rolling out our calling app in Africa, we noticed that the biggest challenge is reaching the people who most need our service. How do you enable someone who does not have a bank account of credit card to pay for a digital service? This is why we are building our payment platform, so that in the future, we can let more companies easily access Africa. And Africans will be able to buy services they never had access to before.

What has been your biggest setback so far?

Hans strongly believes that a successful company has a strong purpose behind it. In the past, launching a company without a strong purpose of helping people has not succeeded in the same way. Purely having a good business model is not enough, having a purpose is key.

What is the next big challenge for your business?

The next big challenge for Talk360 is scale and grow the company further. The company is growing fast, which brings new challenges with it. One is to continue reaching relevant customers globally. Another is to hire candidates at the fast pace to keep up with our growth.
