Tell us about yourself?

My first degree was in computer science. I loved writing code – still do – and consider it a form of art. I’d flourish solving really difficult problems in record time, but I’d flounder crossing my “t’s” and dotting my “i’s”. Doing that is 80% of the work that is required to be a great developer. Today, it is clear to me that being a skilled coder doesn’t necessarily make you a great developer. My personality is not a great fit for it. Being an entrepreneur and running an amazing organization like Bryq is a much closer match to my personality. It allows me to do what I love most – solve hard problems, figure out the next challenge and the things that matter the most, all while creating an organization that can have a tremendous impact and change the world.

What is the inspiration behind your business?

I’ve hired people I loved during the interview process, only to see them fail within a few months. Looking back at the process, I realized that given the data at hand, I couldn’t have done any better. So clearly there must be a better way to make all these decisions – whether we hire, promote or manage talent – that can work better.

And this is what we set out to create – a platform that can improve all of these decisions within a company, while supporting – not replacing – the decision makers.

What is your magic sauce?

Our magic is science! The I/O psychology that we use to help employers find the best fit for their company is what puts us ahead of the pack. Of course, we aren’t going to give away our winning formulas! But our team of in-house psychologists and data analysts work hard to ensure that our product continues to be a quality one. We are constantly analyzing data in order to keep ourselves in check, and that persistence plays a huge role in the success of Bryq.

Where do you see your company going in 5 years time?

We want to see ourselves become a regular brand thrown into conversations around the office. When you hear “Bryq”, you’ll immediately identify it as the best or even the only tool you should use to manage talent. We already love it when people tell us about a non-linear career path they followed based on Bryq’s advice – and how great this is working out for them. We don’t want to be listed in the same sentence as other HR Tech companies because what we do is completely unique to the workforce. We want Bryq to change the way talent is managed on a universal level – while maximizing culture and diversity.

What has been your biggest setback so far?

Like most companies, COVID was definitely a huge setback. Companies were freezing their hiring efforts in the midst of the pandemic and using all their budget to deal with COVID issues, leaving us uncertain as to when the ball would start rolling again.

Of course, the COVID-19 pandemic was a double-sided coin as it also brought great things to our business. Our product allows companies to start the very first part of the hiring process remotely by having a job candidate take a talent assessment, giving us the upper-hand. Additionally, the pandemic made candidates realize how essential things like flexibility, diversity, and value were at their jobs. Not to mention the “Great Resignation”. It’s made people realize that they feel trapped in careers that are a bad fit for them – and we can help them out.

Bryq allows businesses to really prioritize these types of things. By giving candidates a memorable, easy experience, you are also enhancing your brand equity. With all bad comes some good as well. It’s never black and white.

What is the next big challenge for your business?

Like every successful startup, scaling is a challenge. Taking our small organization and ensuring that we keep adding the same quality of people, who adhere to the same cultural values and successfully integrate them, is always a tall order.

We are lucky to have our own platform on our side. It helps us objectively evaluate both internal and external candidates for every opening and make better choices – ultimately building a stronger, faster, more successful company.

How do people get involved/buy into your vision?

The workforce and the world that we live in is rapidly changing on a day-to-day basis. We are becoming a more racially-diverse society and our socioeconomics are no longer as conservative as they might have been in the past. People by and large want to work for companies that value diversity, emphasize culture, and hold themselves accountable for being socially responsible. They want to work for the “good guys”.

What we do is simply recognize whether or not a person is suited for a particular role based on the fundamental aspects of their personalities and their cognitive ability.
